Artist's statement: This work is a response to my residency
at Bundanon. I am using the landscape as a device to explore space
and abstraction – and colour to evoke “air” and the
sense of peace I felt in such a beautiful environment.
The paintings come from direct observation and immersion in the
landscape ... the structure of the environment has been
internalised, producing half-remembered, dream-like views that
represent a "landscape essence" rather than a specific
place, in which heat, air, space, silence and mental privacy play a
major role.
When Charles Blackman saw the paintings in the studio, he was moved
to say that the work “…was
full of shining light, radiant…you let the inner things – the
soul – come into the paintings [and] evoke feelings from the
viewer…”
