Ballan + Pannan Galleries, Melbourne 8
February – 3 March 2007 Artist's statement: These works result from direct observation and immersion in the landscape ... the structure of the environment has been internalised, producing half-remembered, dream-like views that represent a "landscape essence" rather than a specific place, in which heat, air, space, silence and mental privacy play a major role. I try to express the physicality of the Australian bush and my interaction with it through the physicality of the paint. Attempts to control are subverted by randomness – of nature and paint. The scenes depicted are all imagined – they start in concrete reality but grow and change as the painting – the object – asserts iteself in the same way nature does. Thus the paintings may reflect a sense of journey, exploration, adventure or even menace, as often as this dream-like quality – reflecting my experiences in the Australian bush. |
